Rawhide Dog Chews & Housebreaking Problem? Anyone Else Experienced This ?

by James
(Topeka,Ks.)

What I really want to know is " Has anybody else had this experience ?"

I own a 4mnth old half Lab half Sharpei puppy that has been fairly cooperative and quick to housebreak except if I give him a rawhide chewbone.

If he doesn't have a bone he goes to the door and is very good about going outside to urinate. If I give him a rawhide chewbone it almost seems like he is unaware he needs to urinate, he just starts peeing right where he is standing. This has not happened once but enough times that it seems almost constant.

No rawhide chewbone, No pee in house.
Give rawhide chew and no self awareness of needing to pee.

Is this some kind of weird side effect of rawhide on some dogs. I have raised a great many dogs from pups and I have never encountered anything like this before.

Sharpei and canine chews NEW
by: Anonymous

My Sharpei had been given rawhide in past and had malaise, vomiting with it. I stopped offering it to him until the Vet prescribed canine chews for to keep his teeth cleaned. It has beef rawhide in it. I gave it to him last night when he was in normal spirits and this morning he wouldn't get up at usual. Walks around with sad looking face and is malaise. He just wants to lay around and does looks like he feels bad. His breath smells likes something is dead inside. Now I have to take him to the vet to get checked up and I am sure it had something to do with the chew. The Shepherd mix dog I have does alright with them but the Sharpei does not tolerate beef or rawhides well. I should have known from past experience.

Our boxer did the same thing!

That just happened to us! I googled it and found your response! So weird. We had just taken him outside, we gave him the rawhide - and bamm he peed in the house! SO WEIRD. Are you still having that problem?

Peeing and Rawhide Bone
by: Lois DeWitt

I think your pup isn't quite housebroken yet. My guess is that if anything would distract him for a period of time, he would be remiss about urinating.

I know from my dog, Charley, that he can get quite involved with the chewing thing. Also, I would recommend watching to see how your pup is consuming the rawhide--as great chewers can bite off too much and chunks of rawhide can get stuck in their throat or end up being an obstruction in their digestive tract.
