Rawhide Dog Chew Stick Made My Dog Sick!

by Cindy
(New Castle, DE)

I have a 2-1/2 yr old male White Westhighland Terrier. I decided to buy some rawhide chew sticks that claim to clean the dogs teeth. The day after having one, he vomited a lot of yellow stomach bile along with loose runny stools. This is the first time he has had a raw hide chew and I believe it is what caused him to be sick.

Is this common?

Rawhide Dog Chew Stick Made My Dog Sick!

Hi Cindy:

Unfortunately, this is very common with rawhide and the effects that it can have on dogs. While the curing process of rawhide here in the U.S. has stiffer guidelines, that's no true in other countries.

You have to really watch labels and how it is advertised on the packaging. The packaging often leads you to believe that it is American made, when it's really not. Don't be misled by an American flag on the package. Look at the back and see where it is actually manufactured.

What happens is the the hide is cured in "brine" in the U.S. and then shipped to countries like China. By the time it gets there, it is often black and rotten when it arrives. The product is then "BLEACHED" white.

There are many better products than rawhide dog chews for entertainment for dogs. Sweet potato chews are great and a nice source of fiber too!
