Rawhide bones are great with supervision

by Sarah

I give my lab rawhide dog chews about once or twice a month. He had never choked on one. It is such a shame that other dogs have had such terrible reactions to a rawhide bone.

Dogs get bored, and what will they do to pass the time? They chew, mainly on things that smell like you. I have never had a problem with my lab chewing on anything that wasn't his. I believe that providing activities for your dog, such as chewing on a rawhide bone, is great for boredom busters. Not to mention how great it is for their teeth.

The fact that rawhides can cause a blockage in your dogs stomach or that it can choke them is horrible, but everything we give to our dogs goes straight into their mouths!

Who's to say that the cotton from inside that stuffed animal you just gave them can't do the same, or maybe even the squeaker from inside the stuffed animal.

Let your dog be a dog, and let him chew.

Rawhide for Charley--update
by: Anonymous

Years ago I posted a comment that I was concerned about bleach in the raw hide bones Charley was chewing on---I since then have discovered that he was changing color and that he is a blue Standard Poodle, not a black!

Over the years his muzzle, legs and butt are turning gray--and, of course, he is just adorable as ever.

A word about the comment "Rawhide bones are great with supervision," I feel the same way. I give Charley rawhide bones all of the time He never eats anything when I am at work, so when I come home, he likes to chew on them. He has always several pieces he is working on and takes his time with them. He is fastidious about eating anyway, so chewing on rawhide is just another side of that.

Occasionally, he will have a small piece, it will be very soft from his chewing, and I watch him closely so that he doesn't choke on it. I actually caution him about it and he slows down and is careful (Standard poodles!)

I'm still a bit unsure about how rawhide is processed, and intend to find out on the Internet.
