What To Look For When Shopping For Orthopedic Beds For Dogs
When exploring the different choices of dog beds, always look for beds that offer a thick padding of at least 3" which is the standard. However, we recommend a 5" thickness for your older dog.
The thicker the padding the better. However, the standard Orthopedic Foam is not as dense as Memory Foam or Gel, therefore the Gel or Memory Foam beds do not need to be as thick.
If a bed is too soft, it doesn't provide the necessary support that arthritic dogs need. The fill that makes up the bed should always provide balanced weight distribution which is not always found in the cheaper polyester filled dog beds. These beds are often made with pieces of poly fill and before very long all the fill moves to the ends of the bed leaving nothing in the middle. That can't be too comfortable!
Those beds truly are an inferior product and provide little comfort for any dog and especially older dogs who need support.
Know What Type Of Bed You Need
Before purchasing a new
orthopedic dog bed, here are some tips to help you determine which bed will work best:
- Your dog's size and weight.
- Does he suffer with painful conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia?
- Have an idea of where you will place your dog's new bed.
- Give your old pal enough room to stretch out nicely.
- Consider a heated Orthopedic Dog Bed.
- If your dog is incontinent, you also might want to consider a waterproof bed or you can place piddle pads on his new bed.
- Our dogs seem to like the orthopedic bolster beds
(like the one here) the best. The design of the beds provides a sense of security - almost like a cave.
Designer Choices
Some of the top designer dog beds now provide the much needed orthopedic support while offering a great design that looks good in any room. If you're worried about having to forego style due to your dog's bed, don't! You can get a gorgeous bed for your dog that will look nice in any room and provide the support and comfort he needs.
Since they are higher quality, you can expect to pay a little more for them.
Your dog can now have his own sofa bed, headrest or pillow-top bed that looks great and does the job for your best friend.
Keep in mind that the benefits for your best friend are well worth the cost.
Types Of Orthopedic Beds for Dogs
- Gel filled orthopedic beds are absolutely great for the aging pet or any dog that has arthritis or Hip-Dysplasia. They provide maximum support and comfort for dogs suffering with pain. As an added bonus, many of these beds can be thrown in the washer and dryer just as they are.
- Memory foam dog beds are also an exceptional choice of orthopedic dog bed since they adapt to your pet's body while reducing pressure and providing comfort. *ALERT: Memory foam dog beds have been questioned by many in regards to toxins inside the memory foam. Beds that are completely free of these toxins are guaranteed and CERTIFIED free of toxins including formaldehyde, phthalates, PVC and BPA. If this concerns you; you have to make sure the beds are CERTIFIED which gives the guarantee of NON-TOXIC.
- Standard orthopedic beds are generally made with a 3" egg crate. We recommend looking for 5" crate which gives much better support for your old dog.
