My Dog Is Very Sick After Eating A "Flossie" Rawhide Bone!!

(NYC)

My maltese dog lucy is only 4 years old. I had given her and my other dog, a "flossy" rawhide dog bone to chew on for there teeth. Here I am thinking I am helping them.

Well, over a 6 month period I had given my dog Lucy a flossy bone and each time, she had some diarrhea. I figured it was something she ate that upset her belly. Never assumed it was this bone I gave her.

I gave Lucy a "Flossy" rawhide bone 3 days ago, and my dog has been in the hospital now for the past 3 days. It started off with severe diarrhea for a few days, and then she started vomiting and I mean, like 10 times in a matter of minutes. I was so scarred!!!!

I brought her to the vet for an emergency visit and her Heart rate was low and she was very sick. After, 3 days filled with IV'S , X, Ray's and an ultrasound, they said her Cecum was flipped. Her cecum flipped due to being very sick. I feel awful! I made my dog sick and had no idea!!!!!
I am praying she will o.k. but we don't know for sure yet.

THEY NEED TO BAN RAWHIDE BONES! MY DOG COULD HAVE DIED! I now know it was these rawhide bones!!! Don't risk losing your dog, don't buy them!!!!

Thanks for the Warning! NEW
by: Cheryl

Prayers for Lucy and I'm sorry you had to go through this. Thank You for taking the time to make others aware of raw hide being dangerous. I know recently warnings were put out about treats from China making dogs fatally ill. The primary culprit was Wagon Train brand jerky. I now make sure the product label indicates it originates in the USA. Look carefully as oftentimes there is a United States distributor listed and in much smaller print it will say 'Product of China, Indonesia, etc...'
I wonder, though, if anyone can give insight into the safety of bully sticks. It seems that they are heated to a certain temperature to get a roasted affect, likely killing off harmful microorganisms, though I could be wrong. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

My Maltese Very Sick on Rawhide Dog Chew
by: Anonymous

Thank You for posting about your Maltese Lucy.

I just had a scare very much like yours. I also have a Maltese (Cammie). Her daddy got her a rawhide dog chew. The next thing I know my baby is very sick. She kept gagging and throwing up until she finally got the rawhide out of her. I have never seen her so sick. I was so scared that she was going to die. We were on the phone trying to find someone to see her at 11:30pm.

I will never have another rawhide in my house!

Flossie Rawhide Bone
by: Phyllis

I was saddened to learn about Lucie and her experience with the Flossie Rawhide bone.

I was giving my sheltie Dentistix to eliminate/reduce tartar build up. I would check his teeth and gums regularly and one day I noticed that his gums were completely red and inflammed. I contacted my vet and explained my sheltie's condition and I told him about the Dentistix.

My vet examined him and immediately I stopped giving him the Dentistix. He improved. I don't trust rawhide bones; I would never give them to any of my dogs. And now, I won't trust Dentistix because you never know how these products may affect your pet.

I certainly hope Lucie recovers and wish her a speedy recovery too.
