My Dog Chance Has Cancer

by Chance's Owner

This a strange story.

My dog, Chance ( a 7 yr old golden retriever/chow mix) was throwing up off and on for a few days. We took him to the vet and left him for a few hours while they ran tests.

The vet called back and said he had Pancreatitis and that we could treat it with meds. After a few days he started feeling better. Then the 3rd day, he started throwing up again. We take him back to the vet, get an xray, and they find a large construction size staple in his intestines.

The vet said the Pancreatitis was caused by the galvanized coating of the staple, that it has zinc in it that will attack the pancreas. We agree to surgery to have the staple removed. We get a call while Chance is on the operating table that the staple is floating in the intestine, not lodged, but there is a large mass which is what is causing the intestine to not work.

We agree to remove it in an attempt to save his life as he would have died of the blockage. They removed 8" of his small intestines. Chance has been recovering well from the surgery but the Vet called today and said he has a very aggressive intestinal cancer called Adenocarcinoma.

They don't know if the disease has spread all through him yet or not, but that this canine cancer is the worst one he could have. They didn't really have any other info for me other than, I can try to call an oncologist.

Has anyone else ever heard of this cancer or had to deal with it before?
