My 6 month old puppy and his first rawhide bone

by Tara
(Reading, PA)

All I wanted to do was to give my puppy something else to chew on. He has just about every chew toy and item known to man but his will to chew is so great I thought rawhide would be a great 'new' chew. WRONG....

I made sure the rawhide was marked "made in America" I thought that was all I needed to do! My puppy chews the bone down to a nub and then the "stuff" begins!!! accidents everywhere.... and wow do they stink BAD!!! He also appears to have a urinary tract infection (that's my guess) I have a call into the vet.. I need to get my sweet puppy checked out. I'm a bit up-set that I have not heard from my vet's office today!!!!
SO, in the mean time what do you do? How can I help him feel better?

What can he chew? I tried the nyla bones and he doesn't bother with them. Someone told me about Pigs ears... well guess what? I'm NOT buying pigs ears.. it's bad enough I purchased rawhide dog chews! I feed my puppy Artemis Puppy food, he gets lots of water and he loves ice cubes.

My dog is a male Australian Shepherd 6 months old. His name is Keb Mo' and he will have surgery next month to be "fixed." Kebby is so handsome.

I also have a female named Nuka and she is a 7 year old Australian Shepherd. She did not touch the rawhide so she did not experience the belly ache and everything else my male has had.

Can any one help me?

What Can Keb Mo'Chew
by: Janie

Hi Tara:
Sorry to hear about your dilemma with KebMo's first rawhide bone.

I'm a firm believer that the best bones to give dogs are real bones. You can purchase "Natures Variety" bones at the better pet stores. They are kept in a freezer along with their brand of frozen food.

This is a natural choice and in my opinion better for your dog. They can be kind of messy though, so be sure to place an old blanket wherever he goes to chew on the bone.

Hope this helps.

:)
