Protect His Paws With Dogs Shoes

Although The Weather Can Be Tough On A Dog's Paws,
Dogs Shoes Can Protect Them From The Elements!

Dogs Shoes For Sore Paws

dog-paw When many people think of dogs shoes, they tend to think of over zealous dog owners. However, shoes for dogs are actually an excellent product for the prevention and healing of cuts or abrasions on the paw or pad.

One thing to remember is that your dog's paw and the pads on his feet should never be too soft. The surface of your dog's pad should remain a little rough without any cuts or bleeding. This coarse surface provides traction and keeps your dog from slipping.

The seasons and the elements can play a big role in the condition of your dog's feet. Here are some tips for keeping your dog's paws and pads in check from the elements:

  •  Try not to keep your dog on hot pavement for any length of time. The hot pavement (especially asphalt) can burn your dog's pads.

  •  If you walk your dog on salted streets in the winter time, afterwards, rinse his feet with warm water and carefully dry his pads and in between his toes.

  •  Also, many areas use cinders vs salt on the streets in the winter time. Cinders are very hard on your dogs feet and dog boots are definitely recommended on this type of terrain.

  •  If you walk your dog in thick or heavily wooded areas, check his feet upon returning for thorns, etc.

Dog Paw Maintenance

Maintenance of your dog's paws should be performed on a weekly basis:

  •  Examine his paws on the top and the bottom for any strange bumps, cuts, etc.

  •  Feel in between his toes as well for any raised bumps, cuts or bruises. Digital cysts are common in certain breeds.

  •  For very dry and cracked pads, gently blot a little petroleum jelly on his pads. Make sure to do this when the dog will be resting and not running around afterwards. Before bed is best since you want the petroleum jelly to soak in overnight. If he has to be up after you do this, then dog shoes or dog boots are recommended because the jelly will cause his feet to slip on some surfaces, including carpeting. A baby sock will also work indoors by placing a piece of velcro on the top of the sock. DON'T cut off your dog's circulation by making the velcro too tight.

Solutions For Problem Dog Pads

Continuous licking or chewing on one particular area can indicate a problem:

  •  Try soaking the paw in warm water several times daily and dry thoroughly with a clean towel. If this doesn't help, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

Additional Products For Protecting Dog Paws

There are many different types of pet shoes and dog boots available to protect his sensitive paws:

  •  Dogs Shoes for Handicapped Pets

  •  For those pups that don't like to wear boots, Four Paws makes a Lanolin based paw guard that can be left on and reapplied. This is similar to the Vasoline remedy that we mentioned above.
