Dogs Get Very Sick About A Day After Eating Pressed Rawhide EVERY Time!

Both of my dogs are aggressive chewers and at 80 lbs they will easily finish a large pressed rawhide bone in an hour or so. Both are different mixes so there is no common allergy or anything.

The last time I gave them the rawhide dog chews, I was also changing over their food so I thought that was why they had gotten sick - since their food has been switched they have had rawhide twice and both times have not gone to the bathroom for about a day and then all of the sudden (usually in the middle of the night to my convenience) they have uncontrollable bowel movements.

It is very dark in color and is usually followed by soft bloody stool for the next couple of days.
I now realize that this is directly from the rawhide since it is the only variable we changed the past 2 times that would cause this reaction.

After reading how some dogs can die from it, I will no longer be giving them any rawhide dog bones. I liked the pressed rawhide because they didn't seem to choke on it like the softer white rawhide bones/chews, however it obviously is WAY too much for their system to digest.

They are fed a dry raw diet food and have normally healthy digestive systems so it's very upsetting that something considered "natural" could do this to them - and maybe it's allowing them to chew the whole bone. I'm not sure, but regardless, we will be sticking to beef marrow bones from the meat section at the grocery store (usually the frozen section) as a treat.

They are messier, but at least I know there is nothing in there that will hurt them and as long as you don't cook the bones they do not splinter or get soft at all - they last pretty much forever.
