Dog Treats And Cookies For Senior Dogs

With Age, Many Dogs Need Softer Food,
Dog Treats And Cookies

Due to tooth decay, many aging dogs will need softer food, dog treats and cookies. By providing softer food and treats along with a routine brushing, your dog can once again enjoy his food.

The key is to first find an all natural quality dog food soft enough for your dog that will provide the nutrition his senior body needs. You can also add a a few tablespoons of warm water to his dry food to soften it. Because kibble expands when wet, never add more water than this. Then choose a selection of softer all natural dog treats and cookies that won't irritate his tender gums and teeth.

Quality vs Quantity

Although mass produced bargain brand dog treats and dog snacks might be cheaper, unfortunately they can't compete with the QUALITY factor. Most mass produced bargain brands of dog treats are a bargain because of the low-grade ingredients and the preservatives that make up the dog treat.

A good quality dog treat or dog cookie should maintain flavor and texture without the need for preservatives.

Healthy Dog Snack Ideas

Here are some healthy snacks right from the kitchen for your old dog:
  •  Cottage Cheese
  •  Canned Pumpkin
  •  Sliced Apple
  •  Baby Carrots
  •  Plain Rice Cakes (salt free)
Remember, any snacks should be given in moderation such as two tablespoons for large and giant dogs, one tablespoon for medium dogs, one teaspoon for small pups and one-half teaspoon for toy breeds.

Keep Your Old Dog Fit

Just like humans, dogs too love their snacks. The problem isn't about giving dog treats and cookies, rather how much you give without proper exercise. Keep in mind that although cholesterol isn't a problem for dogs, heart disease is and most often can be related to your dog being overweight.

Practice moderation when giving your best friend his favorite dog treat or cookie.

Develop A Routine Your Old Dog Will Love

Dogs of all ages love nothing more than a "routine" that they can count on. They like to know what to expect. That's why it's a good idea to develop a routine time for feeding your dog his meals as well as his dog treats and cookies. ALWAYS, have fresh water available for your dog.

Walk, Walk, Walk

Have you ever heard the saying "if your dog is fat, then you're not getting enough exercise".

Whether or not your old dog has a big yard or not, incorporate walking into his daily "routine" for his health and yours. Walk off those snacks with plenty of exercise. Provide a nice blend of dog treats and be sure to include healthy snacks for your dog as well.

Exercise is key!
