Do Your Homework Before Hiring Dog Sitters And Other Pet Services...

Interview dog sitters just like you would a baby sitter for your children by asking questions and getting plenty of references. Sometimes it's necessary to leave our dogs behind and make alternative arrangments for their care.

Whether vacationing or traveling on business, the decision to have someone care for the family pet should never be taken lightly. The responsibility of their safety and well being lies in the hands of the dog owner and the family they love so dearly.

Most professional pet sitters will have a legal contract outlining their services. Still, do not assume anything if it is not covered in their contract. Question all potential dog sitter's, dog walker's and dog daycare services about the care they provide.

It's true that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to feed, walk and let your dog outside. As the dog owner it is your job to place your dog with someone that you know well and trust, or a professional with outstanding references. Knowing that your dog is in good hands will put your mind at ease and allow you to relax and enjoy your vacation.

Questions And Topics For Interviewing Dog Sitters:

  • Always ask for as many references as possible and be sure to call the references.

    Experience and qualifications:

  • How long have they been pet sitting and when was their last job? Do they have their own dogs or cats? Read between the lines, are they an animal lover or just trying to make a few extra dollars?

  • Are they bonded? You want them to be bonded/insured.

  • What will they do in the event of an emergency? It's your job to provide the dog sitter with all critical information about your dog's needs and health concerns. Include your veterinarian's phone number and address as well as a phone number and address for an emergency after hours clinic in your area.

  • Last but not least, cost and you will want to get it in writing. Make sure that you know exactly what services are included in this cost. For example, will your dog be walked daily and how many times? Will they take care of watering the plants and gathering the mail?

Don't take for granted that your pet is in good hands. Ask questions, check references and always trust your own instincts when deciding who will care for your best friend.
