Choosing The Right Dog Leash
Considerations When Determining Which Dog Leash Will
Work Best For You And Your Dog!
Before buying a dog leash, determine what type will work best for you and your best friend. For instance, if you have two or more dogs then you might want to consider a double leash or even a multiple leash system.
The idea is to decide exactly what you expect from the product before making a choice. We know all too well about wasting money on leashes and collars that were not what we needed or expected.
First determine what purpose you are trying to achieve with the dog lead and make your choice from there. In an effort to help you make the right choice, we have provided a description of the most common leashes and their individual functions:
- Retractable Leash - Extends as the dog moves forward. These dog leads usually extend anywhere from 10' to 26' and are based on the dog's weight. Not recommended for leash training a dog.
- Double Or Multiple Dog Leash - This leash system is for those with multiple dogs. No more juggling numerous leashes. Popular with professional dog walkers. You can also purchase a "coupler" separately that attaches to your existing leash and holds several dogs.
- Traditional Dog Harness - Since harnesses are used for sled dogs, some believe that a harness actually encourages pulling. On the other hand, many dog owners have very successful results with a traditional harness. It simply depends on the dog and the owner.
- No Pull Dog Harnesses - New to the market, a harness that hooks at the front and is becoming increasingly popular due to it's gentle method of leash training a dog. This is great for larger breeds. The other no pull harness is a head-collar that wraps around the head and snout. Personally, we prefer the front hook harness.
- Hands-Free Pet Leash - This is perfect for a dog that is well behaved and enjoys jogging or strolling with his owner. The waist belt keeps your dog safely with you while keeping your hands free.
- Leather Dog Leash - The purpose of leather is really for comfort reasons for the dog owner. The more the pet leash is used, the softer the leather becomes which is easier on the hands. Many prefer leather for its durability or just for fashion reasons.
