Dog Digestion And What Your Dog Eats...

Dog Digestion...
Two of the biggest factors in healthy digestion is the food that your dog eats and the enzymes within the food.

On this particular subject we will provide you with different options of feeding, but as a dog owner, you must determine what type of feeding is best for your own dog.

We strongly recommend seeing a a veterinarian regarding any dog digestion difficulties to rule out any larger health concerns.

The "Raw" Diet...
For many years now, there has been an on-going argument over what type of feeding is best for your dog. Dogs are actually considered omnivores meaning that they can survive on both plants and animals, however, in order for any dog to flourish, meat must be included in his diet.

Many believe that the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food diet, also known as the BARF diet and is "raw" food only is best for a dogs digestive system. They believe that unhealthy nutrition associated with a traditional kibble diet can be eliminated by feeding them the closest thing to what they would eat if they were hunting for food in the wild.

One of the best benefits of feeding your dog a "raw diet" is that raw meat and vegetables are high in digestive enzymes. These digestive enzymes breakdown carbohydrates, protein and fat making it much easier for your dog to digest his food. Proper dog digestion can eliminate many on-going problems such as gas and flatulance and even chronic soft stool. Many also insist that the "raw diet" can eliminate chronic ear infections and other allergies.

We recommend reading a book by Dr. Ian Billinghurst who is known as a leading force behind the "BARF" diet and has written many books on this particular subject.

The Traditional Kibble Diet...
When it comes to feeding your dog processed food (which is what kibbles are) every effort should be made to provide him with the best dry dog food that you can afford. For more information on this topic please refer to our "Best Dog Food" page by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

Unlike raw food, any cooked or processed food lacks the necessary digestive enzymes that your dog needs for healthy dog digestion. Canine digestive problems, dog gas and upset bellies are common with dogs that eat a traditional kibble diet due to the lack of digestive enzymes and valuable nutrients.

If you prefer to feed your dog the traditional kibble diet, here are a few suggestions to provide better dog digestion for your best friend:

  • First, include an enzyme supplement in your dogs diet. This generally helps with normal digestive problems such as flatulance and dog gas. There are quite a few digestive enzymes on the market available in tablet form or granule.

  • We recommend adding a Premium can food and dry food to your dogs diet today.

  • DO NOT feed just once a day. Break his meals down and feed him smaller portions. For example: If you have a large dog and he normally gets 3 cups of kibble a day, provide 1-1/2 cups kibble in the morning and 1 cup of can food with 1/2 cup of kibble mixed together at dinner time.

  • Purchase a raised bowl for your old dog

  • Once your dog is finished eating, do not let him run around. Make him lay down for at least a half an hour after he eats and make a habit of this.

Over the years we have been the proud owners of many dogs and with each new dog, we always learned something. By far the one thing that we learned that has made a huge difference in our dogs lives, was that their quality of life increased tremendously with a premium food and our own process of feeding them.

It can't be repeated enough that a premium food along with an enzyme supplement will help considerably in aiding proper dog digestion and is most definitely money well spent.

Tip: Plain yogurt, acidophilus and lactobacillus are also very helpful for digestive problems.
