CHEW EEZ RAWHIDE DOG CHEWS KILLING MY DOG

by N DEAN
(SANTA MARIA CA SB COUNTY)

WHEN MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY 9 YEARS AGO MY SON THEN 16 BROUGHT HOME A PITBULL MIX THAT HE NAMED ANGEL. JUST LAST MARCH ANGEL BECAME SICK AND I TOOK HER TO THE VET AND FOUND OUT SHE HAS DIABETES.

I DO NOT HAVE ALOT OF MONEY BUT SACRIFICED TO GET THE TEST AND NOW HAVE BEEN GIVING HER 2 SHOTS A DAY.

FOR MONTHS NOW SHE WAS DOING SO MUCH BETTER ALTHOUGH SHE LOST HER SIGHT, SHE WAS STILL HAPPY. YESTERDAY I BOUGHT A BOX OF CHEW EEZ TREATS, THE THIN FLAT ONES AND THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE HER A NICE TREAT.

SHE SOMEHOW ATE THE WHOLE THING AND THE NEXT MORNING SHE WAS THROWING UP. I FOUND THREE LARGE PIECES OF WHAT LOOKED LIKE A RUBBER SHOE SOLE. COME TO FIND OUT IT WAS THE CHEW EEZ TREAT. SHE STILL MUST HAVE SOME INSIDE HER BECAUSE NOW SHE IS VOMITING AND WILL NOT EAT AND WHEN SHE DRINKS WATER SHE THROWS IT UP.

I AM SO UPSET THAT I AM SITTING HERE AT 11 PM WONDERING IF MY PRECIOUS ANGEL IS GOING TO DIE. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THESE SYMPTOMS AND I WILL HAVE TO TAKE HER TO THE VET WHICH I CANNOT AFFORD.

I WILL HAVE TO GET THE SURGERY BECAUSE I GAVE HER THE TREAT THAT WILL KILL HER AND I CAN'T LIVE WITH THAT. SO PLEASE, PLEASE LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SAY DO NOT GIVE YOUR LOVING DOGS ANY TYPE OF RAWHIDE DOG CHEWS, RAWHIDE IS A KILLER FOR DOGS.

I WISH I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT HER A T-BONE STEAK INSTEAD. I LOVE MY DOG AND BY TRYING TO GIVE HER A TREAT I MAY HAVE KILLED HER. PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVICE AND PASS IT ALONG TO YOUR FRIENDS OR PEOPLE YOU MEET IN THE DOG FOOD ISLE.

IT MAY SAVE ANOTHER DOG'S LIFE. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.

SINCERELY,
N.DEAN

It's Still Rawhide....
by: Janie - Admin

No matter how you decide to word it, beef hide is indeed rawhide.

Heeelllooo?
by: AWA

Heeelllooo? Is anyone paying attention?

I am sorry for the loss of your dog via eating RAWHIDE, but Chew-EEz are NOT rawhide, they are BEEFHIDE and quite digestible!

These treats are DANGEROUS!
by: Anonymous

We gave my little dog these treats over the weekend and she had a terrible allergic reaction 7 hours later (common time for allergic reaction to happen is either immediately or within 7 hours).

At 3:00 am our dog's face had swelled up to the size of a Pitbull and she was itching like crazy. We finally found an emergency Vet Sunday morning at 5am luckily after 2 hours of searching.

I don't know what's wrong with these treats, but they should have a warning that the contents have affected many dogs!

This is my dog's favorite treat!
by: emmiesmom

My 11 year old Siberian husky Emmie has been getting one of these everyday of her life for years and i have never had a problem with them. Now I am having a problem finding them in the stores. She will be broken hearted if I can't get these treats anymore. She looks forward to it every evening.

I agree that they MUST be supervised while eating any treat!

Beef Hide vs. Rawhide
by: AWA

Ok, but it is like the difference between filet mignon and the average steak.

Rawhide is the inner layer of the hide of any cleft-hoofed bovine livestock. Beef-Hide is premium rawhide made from cows raised for consumption. American Beef-Hide is derived from corn-fed cows within U.S. borders.

The quality of rawhide is often related to its country of origin:
American Beef-hide: Corn-fed beef raised in the U.S. supply a thick, palatable and high quality chew. American beef-hide is considered "The Source" of choice for premium chews.

Oriental Water-Buffalo: Raised to work in the fields of countries like China, Korea and Thailand, they are a common source of imported rawhide.

South American Range Cows: These animals are fed on grass and typically have little fat and a rough, fibrous consistency. They are warm weather animals with a thinner skin.

The animal's hide is transported to processing plants where it is split, washed, and cleaned. The hides are then cut, formed and dried into many varieties of rawhide you see in the stores.

In less developed countries a lack of modern roads and refrigeration trucks often requires the use of preservatives to get skins from outer-lying areas to processing plants. In the U.S. fresh beef-hides are refrigerated during shipping to prevent degradation, spoilage, fouling and the need for chemical additives.

More directly related to this topic and the comment this pertains to here on old-dog-treats-and-rawhide.com, if your dog has gastrointestinal disease or is eating a therapeutic diet, you should seek a veterinarian's approval before feeding any chews.

Dogs with beef allergies or that consistently swallow bones whole should probably not receive rawhide dog chews unattended.

Beef hide is rawhide - PERIOD!
by: Anonymous

Beef hide is rawhide - the difference is one is supposedly better for your dog. That's highly debatable!

Raw knuckle bones are best for your dog!

You killed your dog, not Purina
by: AWA

This is pathetic - this post. I am sorry for the loss of anyone's beloved pet, but Chew-eez treats did not kill your dog. They are beef hide and quite digestible. I've been giving my dogs Chew-Eez Strips for 19 years with no side effects and they absolutely can not wait to eat that treat.

They LOVE them. Rawhide, well that may not be so digestible and may cause problems, but I fail to see in your post why Chew-Eez Treats killed or is killing your dog.

Rawhide Requires Supervison
by: DVM :)

Wow, very anecdotal. No dog should be left alone with any chewing aid because they are dogs and can choke on these. It does not mean the product is bad, it requires supervision.

The larger headed breeds (pit bulls for example) have very strong chewing muscles and require a very tough large rawhide to be able to withstand their chewing.

What is wrong with cheweez beefhide?
by: Walter

I read your post but unfortunately you didn't mention what is wrong with Cheweez? I have been giving my cocker spaniel Cheweez for years with no problems.

Beefhide vs Rawhide Dog Chews
by: Kelle

My mother and I have been feeding our dogs (they are of mixed breed) Alpo Cheweez for the past 10 years.

Our dogs absolutely love them and we have NEVER had an adverse reaction. I don't know if it is because there is a difference between rawhide and beefhide, but Alpo cheweez are beefhide, maybe the rawhide the above dogs ate, was not eatable or even real animal hide.

I feel terrible for people who have lost dogs or they have become sick because of that! My most sincerest condolences!

Rawhide bones Killed my dog!!!!!!!!!!!
by: James from Dallas TX

I found and gave my mother a pit bull pup. Peetie was a very loving dog and would actually smile at anyone who walked through her front door. All he wanted was to be around people. He was a one in a billion.

My mother would give him rawhide bones as a treat as he seemed to love them. Then just last Saturday he became very ill. Vomiting constantly and unable to keep it down. We rushed Peetie to the vet to find out Rawhide bones splinter and cut him internally!

We had to put him down because he was hemorrhaging and the vet could not save him.

IF ANYONE WHO READS THIS HAS A DOG, DO NOT GIVE THEM RAWHIDE BONES FOR THEY WILL KILL YOUR BELOVED COMPANION.

Rawhide Dog Chew Dangers | Cheweez Rawhide | I agree
by: Rose Mary

I'm so grateful I read your post. I was upset because my four dogs (my babies) love the chicken-flavored Rawhide Cheweez that I could find at only one store in Albuquerque.

They quit selling them and I'd been going to every grocery store, pet store, website, etc. trying to find just the one kind they like. Last week, though, our little blind toy poodle choked on a piece of an old Cheweez he found under a sofa cushion and luckly, I was able to stick my hand into his throat and pull out the piece of rawhide.

I'm so sorry about your dog and so grateful you let us all know the dangers of rawhide.
