Treatment Methods For Canine Hip Dysplasia

Dealing With Canine Hip Dysplasia

Canine hip dysplasia is believed to start in younger dogs. As the dog begins to grow, the joint tissue grows irregularly causing a lack of tissue support and bone on bone rubbing.

In severe circumstances, the joint can actually slip in and out of place causing extreme pain for the dog. Veterinarians see more cases of dog hip dysplasia than any other orthopedic condition. Genetics and environmental factors are thought to be the primary causes.

It wasn't until one of our own dog's, "Gretchen" a twelve year old Doberman acquired this debilitating illness that we realized how limited we were in helping her.
Although her mind was still young, unfortunately her long legs and the hips that carried her, were not. She was placed on every traditional anti-inflammatory NSAID on the market. At one point she went into liver failure because the dosage prescribed was entirely to high. Although her liver managed to return to normal, we were running out of options.

That was several years ago and since then we have learned alot about this condition. The options today are MUCH BETTER AND SAFER than they were several years ago and that includes natural treatment methods as well. The following regimens are the most common methods used today.

Non-Surgical Traditional Methods of Treatment For Dog Hip Dysplasia

The following are the most common non-surgical methods of treating hip dysplasia by traditional Veterinarians:
  •   Non-steroidal drugs (Rimadyl, Metacam and Etogesic) are powerful drugs that do help but have many side effects. These drugs are VERY HARD on the organs and dog owners MUST keep a close eye on their best friend by having routine blood work done every six months.
  •   Ultram is for pain and is considered safer than NSAIDS. While we believe that natural alternatives should be tried first; Ultram is a good option if you can't seem to find any relief for your old friend using natural alternatives.
  •   Laser treatment of the joint using infrared light is another option that you can check into to see if it is offered in your area.

Holistic Approach To Dog Hip Dysplasia

The following are just a few of the natural treatment methods that deliver EXCELLENT results for treating canine hip dysplasia. As mentioned above, see our blog for many more options.
  •  Acupuncture once weekly for roughly 15 weeks is considered the norm for Hip Dysplasia in dogs. Our doberman "Jenna" had a round of accupuncture along with a session of rain drop therapy (hot oil massage - see more below) in the Spring when her hips were showing signs of soreness.dogs-with-hip-dysplasia

We really weren't sure what to expect after the therapy, but to our suprise, it helped her tremendously. When we first arrived, Jenna's back end was crouched and she was having a hard time standing tall. But, immediately after the therapy her stance was completely vertical.

What's even better is that the results lasted a long time. Keep in mind that each dog is different and the severity of the arthritis varies from dog to dog and this will of course determine how often the accupuncture is needed as well as the out come.

  •  Rain drop therapy using essentials oils combined with accupuncture can really help with pain due to arthritis. To continue with Jenna's story; along with the accupunture, her vet gave her a hot oil massage and Jenna absolutely loved it. She was so relaxed that she went to sleep. They massage the dog with essential oils and place moist heated towels over the effected area of the dog. Nice!

  •  Holistic Vets usually recommend adding Probiotics and Omega 3 Fatty Acids as well.
  •  Dog hydrotherapy or dog swimming is an excellent option for dogs with hip pain or any type of arthritis really. Many holistic vets offer hydro therapy at their facility.

Prevention Is Key

Although genetics play a big role in the development of hip dysplasia in dogs, there are other leading factors as well. A healthy all natural nutritious food is your dog's best friend when it comes to his over all health. Always feed your dog the absolute best possible food that you can. Many dog owners do not realize this until it's too late. Your dog's long term health depends upon it. Unhealthy feeding patterns over the years have contributed significantly to the progress of hip dysplasia.

The best prevention starts with a nutritious meal. Although the reversal of canine hip dysplasia can be difficult if full blown, we still recommend placing your dog on a superior diet immediately no matter what the age or the seriousness of the disease.

A high quality liquid glucosamine to lubricate and nourish the cartilage coupled with a wholesome diet including FATTY ACIDS such as FISH OIL are critical. However, should your dog already have full blown hip dysplasia or arthritis, you will need more. There are quite a few superior natural dog products on the market today for eliminating your dog's pain.

Tips On Preventing And Managing Canine Hip Dysplasia

  •  Dogs who have hip dysplasia must be kept at a moderate weight.
  •  Regular exercise is crucial with several small walks daily.
  •  Again, a healthy, ALL NATURAL diet is a must.
  •  Add a liquid glucosamine to his/her diet.
  •  Include a toxin free fish oil in the diet.
  •  Include probiotics daily for managing hip dysplasia in dogs.
  •  Keep your dog comfortable with an orthopedic dog bed (heated also helps).
  •  Keep his bed away from cold drafty areas.
  •  A gentle massage for canine hip dysplasia is comforting for your best friend.
  •  If necessary, place your pet on one of the medications listed on our blog to alleviate the pain.

We offer a wonderful page on our blog dedicated to dog pain relief which includes a break down of prescription, non-prescription and natural dog products for eliminating pain due to arthritis and hip dysplasia.
