Canine Cancer - The Two Things You MUST Do
For Treating Cancer

Canine Cancer Hit Home For Us

Almost 4 years ago our yellow labrador "Lulu" developed canine cancer of the bowel. We were devestated to say the least. Her surgeon is a wonderful, caring, excellent doctor and we of course opted to have the cancerous tumor removed. It wasn't easy on our old girl and it was just the beginning of rebuilding her health.

The surgery was a success and the tumor was completely removed. After the surgery however, she developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome and was also at the beginning stages of Liver Disease. Lulu always struggled with allergies, anal gland problems related to allergies, continuous soft stool, digestive issues, yeast infections, skin problems and I could literally go on.

Although her diet always consisted of all natural high quality foods; after the surgery she required a completely new diet tailored to her many issues.

The Two Most Important Things We Did For Lulu

We completely understand how devestating it is to find out that your best friend has Cancer. With that in mind, we want to share with you what has worked for us in terms of healing Lulu. Our situation with Lulu was a little different in that we had to develop a diet that would work for her liver disease, but not upset her Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Plus, we also had to provide her with all the necessary nutrients she required as an older dog and recovering cancer patient.

There are TWO THINGS that you MUST DO for treating your Cancer patient:

  1. Since diet is the foundation for good health, early nutritional intervention is where we immediately focused our attention and we recommend that you do the same. Feed a healthy home cooked diet. Dogs with cancer and other diseases recover quicker and remain healthier on a home made diet tailored to meet their specific needs.

A cancer diet for dogs typically requires high fat, moderate levels of high quality protein and low amount of carbohydrates. A diet containing 50-60% of total calories from fat, 30-50% of calories from protien and the remaining from carbohydrates is recommended.

When it comes to diet, we recommend discussing your options with a holistic veterinarian since they are highly educated in nutrition and their therapy always involves diet. Keep in mind that unfortunately one diet just doesn't work for all dogs and these percentages might not be the case should your dog have any other health concerns besides cancer like our girl Lulu. Also, should your dog suffer with Pancreatitis; a high fat diet probably won't work.

The type of fat included in a canine cancer diet such as omega 3 is critical for cancer patients. Excellent sources of omega 3 include salmon and other cold water fish as well as flaxseed. If you use flaxseed, it's important that you get cold pressed liquid which can be found in many organic refridgerated sections.

Dr. R.M. Clemmons, DVM, PhD of the University of Florida shares that other supplements should be added to the canine cancer diet such as calcium (be very careful when adding calcium), selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, ginkgo bilboa, green tea, grape seed extract and COQ10.

Many say that a raw fed diet is ideal for dogs battling Canine Cancer, however we fed a cooked diet.

AVOID GRAINS COMPLETELY - THEY TURN INTO GLUCOSE AND FEED CANCER CELLS. ALSO AVOID VEGETABLES WITH A HIGH CONTENT OF SUGAR.

  2. Both conventional and holistic doctors understand the importance of a healthy immune system for treating and managing cancer in pets and people. The immune system is made up of organs, cells and other substances that protect the body from disease and infection.

When your pet is diagnosed with cancer, you MUST build your dog's strength and you do this by building and improving his weakened immune system. Dr. Clemmons also says "the answer to cancer lies in the immune system". He indicates that the key to achieving a successful outcome is by stimulating the dog's immune system.

Besides home cooked meals, Include "K9 Immunity" to restore your dog's strength. Again, canine cancer and all the treatments that go with it, destroy and weaken your dog's immune system. His immune system is what makes him strong and helps to speed his recovery. We are completely convinced that Lulu would not be in the condition she is today, had we not placed her on an Immune builder.
