Another Dog Sick on Exer-hide Rawhide Chew From Walmart!!

by Kelly
(Mayfield Village, OH (Cleveland))

My dog chewed on an Exer-hide rawhide dog chew from Walmart all day.

Later that evening he had a very high fever and trouble breathing. I could feel his heart beating very fast. It lasted for about an hour and after a while he fell asleep. I googled "Exer-hide" Walmart and found several other stories where dogs had gotten sick on these bones.

I called Walmart the next day and made a formal complaint and asked them to have these bones pulled from the shelves.

It's been almost 2 weeks and I haven't heard from anyone from Walmart. I'm thinking of calling a local TV station to see if they want to get this story out there.

I'd love to know if anyone else has had this happen to their dog.

Exer-hide Made In China Had Mold Inside - What Should I Do?
by: I'm freaking out!!

I just gave my dog an exer-rawhide and he loves them and eats them all the time.

For some reason, I happen to notice that they were made in China and while opening I also noticed a kind of dry crispy on the top.

I scraped it off with a knife and figured it was burnt flavoring, but at this point, I still wasn't sure about giving it to him. Everyone says that I'm over protective with him, not to mention that he's anxiously waiting for this treat and jumping all over the place.

I decided to just over look it and give it to him anyway. About ten minutes later I notice him hiccupping and by this point he has the top knot ripped completely off and is working on the center part.

I take a look at it again and notice that the one side is gray in color and I decide to rip it open and to my surprise there is a twisted piece of moldy rawhide in the center of this thing.

I'm just MORTIFIED!!! I can't stop the tears as I type, because he is MY LIFE. I'M SO WORRIED, thank GOD he didn't really eat too much, but after reading all these reviews what's to much???

How do i know? I'm unemployed and all I can do now is watch him like a hawk. Oh, this is heartbreaking. I know that every vet is going to say "bring him in" & I don't have the money, plus they'll just send us home.

I'm going to call the animal hospital right now!

A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THIS WEBSITE

Hello:
I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal and I hope everything turned out o.k. We would love to hear a follow up from you to let us know how your dog is doing?

Unfortunately, we are hearing more and more stories of problems with rawhide coming from China. While we don't recommend feeding rawhide of any kind; please stick with rawhide that is manufactured here in the USA if you really have to.

Thanks for sharing your story with us and we hope your furry boy is o.k.

Dog Who Eats Just About Anything - But Not This!
by: Anonymous

I bought an Exer-Hide 9" Rawhide Bone(Chicken Flavored - Made in China) at Walmart today. When I got home,I was excited about giving it to my German Shorthair Pointer (who is a good outdoor hunting dog) as a treat. I called him over and happily waved the bone in the air above his nose. I thought he'd get all excited with his treat and we would have a happy time. Instead, he sniffed the bone, shied back away from it, and made a beeline for the door. Not to be deterred from sharing this jolly time with my dog, I threw the bone in the air so we could play our usual game of "keep away" that we play with various objects and treats. The dog would have nothing to do with this bone! So strange was his reaction to this thing that I decided to look it up on the internet. From what I have found online, I'm thinking my dog's nose is doing a better job weeding out unsavory (and possibly harmful)products than a large corporation! And now I'm thinking,"Thank heavens he didn't eat it!"

LOVE THEM!!
by: Anonymous

My three dogs have been eating the Exer-hide chips from Walmart for over 3 years. They are all large dogs, mixed breed. None have ever experienced any problems what so ever, with the exception that if I give too many (my largest eats 4-5 in one sitting sometimes) he may have a little bit of diahrea the next day. Not anything unusual though. Who ever has been complaining, thanks a lot. Now I can't find these rawhide chips anywhere (Walmart specifically)and I live way out in the country. Now I have to go find rawhide elsewhere. Maybe your dog can't digest them but that is no reflection on the product. That is your dog's problem with digestion.

Raw Hide from Stop and Shop
by: Anonymous

My beagle had one of these bones on Thanksgiving Day. My daughter bought the bone at stop & shop not Wal-Mart. She actually didn't eat hardly any of it but she woke up with horrible diarhea the next day. Each day since she has gotten a little worse. Today she is lethargic and shaking like a leaf. Being a beagle she has gotten into many things over the years so i wasn't immediately concerned but she has never been as sick as this. I have a vet appt. at 5. I'm hoping she'll be fine and won't cost too much to get her back on her feet.

No bad effects yet but...
by: Anonymous

Our little pug mix is a hyper girl and LOVES chewing on things so we bought the chicken flavored Exer-hide twists, in the past few days she's had a lot of them, and I mean a lot.

She hasn't shown any bad side effects but after seeing these comments, I'm never giving her another one!

Can't take the risk!

My dog almost died
by: bob

We gave our beagle these Exer-hide chews and he became violently ill and nearly died. Another 12 hours and our vet said he would not have survived.

So, $800 later we have our dog back and getting well. These rawhide chews are not good and should be pulled from the shelves.

I recently reported this to the FDA as well.

My dog would've died
by: Anonymous

We normally buy the large rawhide chews from Walmart and our dog never had any problems. However, Walmart was out of chews for a couple weeks so I bought several of the Exer-hide beef bones.

First our dog vomited all over the house and then developed watery diarrhea. When I finally removed the Exer-Hide remnants he was all better the next day.

I can't find a customer service number on the package but I do see "NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION." Ahhhh, that's good to know!

Exer Rawhide Dog Bones Made My Dog Sick!!!
by: owner of two beagles

My one beagle is currently in the vet hospital with gastroenteritis.

He vomited up the Exer-hide chicken flavored square rawhide dog bone after eating it. The vomiting and diarrhea lasted over 24 hrs.

On day 2, he started having bloody diarrhea and yelping. He was shaking like a leaf. They did blood work, stool samples, ultrasounds of his abdomen and diagnosed him with gastroenteritis.

The vet asked if we recently opened a new bag of dog food or bones. As a matter of fact we did just open a brand new 2 lb bag of exer-hide bones from Walmart right before my dog got sick.

My vet told me to report it. I'm going to do this tomorrow during business hrs. and call Walmart, exer-hide if i can ever find a contact number and the fda and possibley my local news channel if nothing is done about it. i have read hundreds of posts about these bones and cant understand why they have not been recalled yet???? i have better things to do with my time then write this post if it weren't true!!!! i am a nurse and exhausted but felt it very important to get this out there for a warning to other dog owners. by the way just noticed my second beagle today while on our walk had the runs so i followed him with a flash light each time he went out back and sure enough he had the runs every time!!! keeping a close eye on him now in case he needs to be seen by the vet also!!!!!

WORMS in Exer-Hides from Walmart!
by: Anonymous

Tonight I gave my dog (almost 100 lbs) an exer-hide beef knuckle bone from Wal-Mart. It had BLACK WORMS all through it. I didn't notice until he had bitten it in half and there were at least 10 that I could see. Thankfully he had only been chewing on it for about 2 minutes.

I am disgusted and will no longer be purchasing these rawhide chew bones.

Toy Poodle and Walmart Rawhide
by: Anonymous

A few weeks ago I purchased (1) Exer-Hide from Walmart to see if my dog would enjoy the rawhide dog chew and he did.

So, a few days ago I purchased two more, but for some reason I thought maybe I should search the Internet to see if it is harmful for him to swallow it. To my dismay I found these comments from several people.

I am removing what's left and throwing it away. I can't take the chance of my dog getting sick, knowingly having these concerns.

Exer-Hide is the Wal Mart brand name for those imported Rawhide Dog Chews
by: Upset Chiweenie owner

So Wal-Mart is definitely the one who needs to do something about this.

I feel sick that I gave my dog something that I purchased in good faith from Wal-Mart that nearly killed my dog while saying right on the label "Exer-hides is a safe way to satisfy your dog's chewing needs"!!

My dog almost died Tuesday, July 19th 2011
by: Upset Chiweenie owner

I am a former veterinary technician and Registered Nurse. I've also given my dogs rawhides without any problem whatsoever on a very regular basis for at least 40 years.

If I had not been home at the time of the medical emergency, my dog would be dead now and I sincerely believe that Exer-Hides were the culprit because of the symptoms, results of the lab work on the dog's blood and the fact that her reaction happened very shortly after chewing on an Exer-Hide knotted bone.

This place doesn't give enough space to give all the important details. Wal-Mart needs to remove these from their shelves NOW! I believe there is something TOXIC on some of those bones!

My Dog Got Sick On An Exer-Hide Rawhide Bone!
by: Anonymous

I purchased the large chicken flavored Exer-hide knotted rawhide bone for my dog last night from a local WalMart.

Within 10 hours my dog started experiencing heavy diarrhea which required contact with our Veterinarian. I firmly believe the Exer-hide chew was the cause of the problem and will no longer be purchasing them.

I really think that the Exer-hide should be investigated further as I have to wonder if there should be a recall on them as well.

I purchased the chicken flavored Exer-hide large chew bones from WalMart last night and gave one to my dog. Today he will not eat and has horrible diarrhea. I had no idea there was any kind of animal product recall going on until I phoned my vet concerning my dog's condition.

I have done some checking and cannot find where the Exer-hide has been listed with this recall but I am really thinking that it should be.

Rawhide Chews - NO-No
by: Kkodiak

For Your Info..
ALL rawhide chews can prove fatal to dogs. I am amazed that these are still freely sold in supermarkets, pet stores and even vets (who should know better). If eaten they can swell and cause Gastric Torsion (Google it for more info) which is an EXTREMELY painful condition, being a blocking , bloating and twisting of the gut and as I said - can often be fatal in a very painful manner. If your dog DOES like to chew - get him a good quality rubber one and be safe.

No Ill Effects For My Dogs Yet - Exer-hide Rawhide Dog Chews

Have given my small dogs Exer-hide chew sticks for awhile. Have never had a problem, but didn't think that there would ever be one. I bought a big bag of the small chicken flavored chews from Walmart not too long ago, have only given a couple out to the dogs, haven't noticed any problems with the boys yet. My bag says they are made in China. I have now pitched them out. Don't want to take a chance.

Rawhide Dog Chews - Go to the source
by: Anonymous

First of all, I rarely if ever would feed my dogs rawhide dog chews and certainly not imported. So, people wake up and play safe. Just because a product is sold, does not translate into you should feed it to your dog!

Find out who manufactures the actual brand and go after the dept. of agriculture to stop allowing it to be sold. Unless the rawhides cause widespread devastation like the dog food recall did a few years ago, NO National store chain will pull it!

Take the high road and go to the source! And it is not Walmart. After all, they are a national giant chain store. It would be nice if corporate America had a conscious, but we know better!

It's all in the money!

I don't know what kind of rawhide makes them sick. I threw out the top of the rawhide package so I'm not sure. My boston terrier has had diarrhea for a couple of days now. I did buy rawhide from Walmart.

I have started feeding her boiled chicken and rice, and I gave her a small amount of pepto bismol last night. She still has some diarrhea.

If anyone can tell me more about the rawhide, that would be great. I bought a big bag also some bones of rawhide dog bones at Walmart. Thanks

Please - Are Exerhide Rawhide Chews Available in the UK??
by: Angela

Does anyone know if these are available in the UK. Stopped giving my retrievers any type of rawhide chew because the dogs didnt have the patience to chew them properly. Ended up at the vet with one very sick dog who got the chew stuck in his gut. Sickness was horrendous poor thing. Hes ok now thank god but this was after a 2 day stay at the vet - xrays, on a drip because of dehydration, IV antibiotics, anti-sickness drugs, the list was endless. So please everyone be careful when giving your dogs any type of rawhide chew, especially if they bolt their food!!
I asked if the exer-hides were available here in the UK so i can warn other people about the possible problem. Thanks

My Dog Is Sick on Rawide From Walmart (Made in Brazil)

I too have a sick dog that started this evening with vomiting and diarrhea out the blue and was puzzled at why he was fine and then out of no where he's so sick. I started looking for suggestions to why he might be sick and came across these claims. After reading these messages I immediately went to read the package of the rawhide bones I gave my dog and sure enough the same ones from Brazil, Exer-hide. I too purchased these from Walmart. My dog is now restless and seems to be breathing heavily with some drooling. I pray he will be alright and NEVER again will I give him rawhide.

Yet ANOTHER dog sick on "Exer-Hides" from Wal-mart!!!!
by: Anonymous

On Monday night, I gave my Border Collie/ Blue Heeler mix an Exer-Hide bone, what I thought at the time an innocent, fun treat for him. The next morning he wouldn't even touch his food, and this dog eats like crazy, he would never turn his nose up to food. He acted very lethargic all day. Then on Wednesday, he started vomiting and getting very, very weak. He has remained the same till now, on Friday. He is still very weak but the vomiting has become less frequent. I've been giving him Pepto Bismol which has helped a little. I just can't afford a vet bill, and I'm praying with all my faith that he will pull through. I will NEVER buy Exer-Hides or any rawhide bones again. And I recommend that you all do the same.

Choking Hazard - EXER-HIDES Rawhide Dog Chips
by: Mrs. H.

After reading the comments, now I can relate to why my dogs (7 Pits and 1 Boxer) have been sick off and on after ingesting the EXER-HIDES Rawhide Chips. My biggest complaint however, is that the chips are too small and present a real danger of choking. I have to sort through the bag and select only the largest ones for my dogs and donate the smaller ones to smaller dogs down the road. I recommend that no dogs ingest rawhide too frequently.

I will now purchase other more suitable products.

I gave my dogs femur bones and the bone splintered while my dogs ate them.

I'm worried that they will be sick or have an obstruction, or worse yet that the splinters with cut up their intestines. I will never buy this product again or any pet product from Walmart. I will update on the outcome later. I hope that this will pass through their systems. But I have a feeling we will be going to the vet.

Walmart Exer-hides Made My Dog Sick As Well
by: Alexis

I didn't even realize how bad these rawhide dog chews were. My dog has been sick off and on, but it never lasts for more than a day or two at most, and she'll go for months with no issues at all.

I normally get her Busy Bones or Denta Bones or whatever they are called and most recently I have been giving her these Ol' Roy Munchy Bones. These type of "bones" don't last her very long though so I started buying the big bags of Exer-hides.

She would maybe only chew one every other day or so, no major issues. Then we inherited a chihuahua from a friend... I had nothing small enough for this dog to chew so I bought yet another bag of extra little Exer-hides. I always supervise the dogs when they eat them, but I was putting out four or five at a time because my beagle was stealing them all from the chihuahua. It didn't hit me until this morning when I found my beagle's crate covered in vomit and diarrhea that something was very wrong.

This was worse than she's ever been. And her vomit was nothing but undigested pieces of these rawhide dog bones. That made me want to do some research on the harmful effects of these things and I happened on this page. Does it even do any good to file a complaint with Wal-Mart? Can these things be returned?

I am just amazed that they would keep a product like this on their shelves with so many being affected in such a manner. I will never be giving these to my dogs again, and I'll be telling everyone I can to do the same.

Three Sick Dogs on Walmart Exerhides - Rawhide Dog Chews!
by: Anonymous

I have been giving my three dogs Exer-Hides from WalMart for years now and never had a problem until this week.

I opened up a new package for them earlier this week and around the same time began having trouble with all three dogs vomiting all over the house.

This has been going on for several days and all three dogs have been affected. I thought that maybe they caught something from a neighbor's dog, but then I realized that they seem to fine and keeping down their food all day long, that is until evening, which is when they each get an exer-hide to entertain them while the husband and I watch our evening tv.

That is when the vomiting starts. Sometimes, it is one dog, and sometimes it is more than one.

It took until tonight for me to put two and two together. From now on there will not be any WalMart brand Exer-Hides in this house!

Walmart Exer-Hides made my Aussie sick.
by: Faye Pallmer

My Australian Shepherd had a sudden allergic reaction while chewing on an Exer-hide from WalMart.

She dropped the rawhide bone and got up to start rubbing her face on the furniture and on me. Within minutes her muzzle was very swollen, even got welts on top of her nose. Then her eyes started to swell and water.

She threw up a lot of rawhide pieces. I called the vet and was told to give her Benydryl ASAP. Within a couple hours after the medication my puppy started to get some relief.

I intend to tell the local Walmart what happened to my dog and I will throw the rest of the Exer-hides in the trash.

My Dog Too! Sick on Walmart Exer-hide Dog Chew
by: Charles C.

Hey my dog had one of these treats last night as a snack before bed. Needless to say, I left for work this morning he was fine, but fortunately I had arrived from work just in time.

I came home to a nearly dead dog. I took him to an emergency hospital and apparently it would have cost me $1100 to treat my small dog.

Thankfully he had not completely torn the chip to pieces and I believe that may be just what saved his life.

I ended up still having to spend a few hundred dollars, but better that than lose my precious little guy.

I'm not sure about you, but I will definitely be making my voice heard especially after the amount of instances of pet owners dogs that have become sick from these rawhide "death" treats.

No one should have to endure what I went through tonight. The sights and odors were bearable but the thought of something happening to my dog just made the situation worse.

I will be looking into legal matters regarding this product.
